چکیده

Wittgenstein remarked to a number of people that he got the main idea for the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus upon reading an account of the use of a physical scale model with dolls and model automobiles and busses in a courtroom case about an traffic accident. He had, he said, been serving in the Austrian army at the Front in the Fall of 1914 at the beginning of World War I when he read a newspaper account of the court trial, and, upon reflecting upon the use of the dolls and model automobiles, suddenly realized that a proposition is a picture. After Wittgenstein’s death, his friend von Wright wrote a memoir about him, in which he mentions the importance Wittgenstein put on reading about the use of a scale model. von Wright also suggests, in a footnote, that “it would be interesting to know whether Wittgenstein’s conception of the proposition as a picture is connected in any way with the Introduction to Heinrich Hertz’s Die Prinzipien der Mechanik”, remarking that Wittgenstein held the book in high esteem. 1 [ A shorter talk of the same title was given in Vienna on July 6, 2000 at HOPOS (History of Philosophy of Science Conference ) 2000. The HOPOS 2000 version has since been published in History of Philosophy of Science: New Trends and Directions , Michael Heidelberger and Friedrich Stadler (Eds.) Dordrecht-Boston-London: Kluwer 2002 (Vienna Circle Institute Yearbook 9/2001), pp. 121-135.]

Subject , World and Value ( Sorne Hypotheses on the Influence of Schopenhauer in the early Wittgenstein )

It is an acknowledged fact that Wittgenstein read Schopenhauer's Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung (The World as Will and Representation. ) in his youth, and possibly other works by the same author (Anscombe, 1963; McGuiness, 1988). In general, Wittgenstein is reluctant to recognize other authors' influences on his thought, but in his Notebooks, 1914-1916 2 he makes explicit reference to Schop...

Construction , Convention , and Subjectivity in the Early

Some of Wittgenstein’s early remarks on the connection between logic and the world leave a highly anticonventionalist impression. For example, in the Tractatus, he says that the world is “in logical space” (TLP 1.13) and that logic “pervades the world” (TLP 5.61). At a first glance, this seems to imply that the rules of logic are determined by the way the world is. And this, in turn, seems to b...

Contextualism and Nonsense in Wittgenstein's Tractatus

Central to a new, or 'resolute', reading of Wittgenstein's Tractatus LogicoPhilosophicus is the idea that Wittgenstein held there an 'austere' view of nonsense: the view, that is, that nonsense is only ever a matter of our failure to give words a meaning, and so that there are no logically distinct kinds of nonsense. Resolute readers tend not only to ascribe such a view to Wittgenstein, but als...

Elucidation and Nonsense in Frege and Early Wittgenstein

This paper is excerpted from a manuscript in which James Conant argues that Wittgenstein’s famous closing description of sentences of the Tractatus as nonsensical draws on a conception of nonsense at odds with the conceptions at play in a couple of standard interpretations. Conant describes these interpretations as (i) positivist interpretations which depict Wittgenstein as furnishing a method ...

The Tractatus on Logical Consequence*

THE TRACTATUS ON LOGICAL CONSEQUENCE José L. Zalabardo ABSTRACT: I discuss the account of logical consequence advanced in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus. I argue that the role that elementary propositions are meant to play in this account can be used to explain two remarkable features that Wittgenstein ascribes to them: that they are logically independent from one another and that their components re...
